It's important to understand that step-parenting is not easy and that there is no way to fully prepare for it. No matter how many books you read or how many degrees you have, the range of emotions you can experience in a short time can be overwhelming. The constant cycle of guilt and joy can only be experienced, not taught.
It's also essential to acknowledge that step-parenting was never a part of God's original plan for families. It results from our imperfect world, and the odds may be against you. However, with God's help, you can succeed and excel as a step-parent. Knowing it won't be easy is the first step towards making it work.
You may be thinking, ok, it's hard.... ok, it wasn't the original design... now what? Pray, and I mean earnestly pray! Pray together, pray alone, pray with the kids, ask for others to pray with you and for you. Study God's word and apply it to any situations that you come against; inspect your thoughts and heart with it.
